White Dove of the Desert

In January, Susie and I decided to go on a tourist outing to the nearby Tono Odoham Native American reservation to visit the Mission San Xavier del Bac (aka White Dove of the Desert) and have some frybread. It is the oldest Catholic church in the U.S. and was built between 1777 and 1797. It's bright white walls stand out against the surrounding flat land.
Before we walked over to the chapel, we stopped by the little snack shop on the premises to enjoy a nice lunch of Indian Frybread and Tacos. Frybread is the original tortilla. The Indian Taco was almost the same as a Mexican Taco but it used frybread as the shell. Ours was a vegetarian taco, smothered with beans, tomatos lettuce and queso fresco. It was greasy delicious.

The mission is really beautiful. The detailing in the chapel is exquisite. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any real good shots inside the chapel. A lot of work went into the creation as well as the restoration of this landmark.

After our visit to the White Dove, we headed further west to the Casino Del Sol for a little gambling and giving the local economy a boost. We weren't big winners but we had a great time.
